KOTA MARUDU: A catastrophic fire swept through a two-story structure housing the staff room, administrative office, and storage facilities of SK Langkon on Saturday evening, leaving approximately 95 percent of the semi-permanent building completely destroyed.
The semi-permanent structure, measuring 80 feet in length and 40 feet in width, suffered near-total devastation in this devastating incident.
Fortunately, no injuries or fatalities were reported.
According to the Operations Control Centre of the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) Sabah, emergency responders received the distress call at 6:53 PM, prompting the Kota Marudu Fire and Rescue Station to mobilise personnel to the scene.
“Firefighters arrived at 7:09 PM and discovered the blaze engulfing the staff room, administrative office, and school storage area.
“Firefighting operations commenced at 7:10 PM utilising two water streams spanning 200 feet with three nozzles,” the statement revealed.
JBPM Sabah confirmed that water supplies were sourced from fire engines and water tanker trucks to combat the inferno.
The department reported that the flames were successfully contained by 7:38 PM, effectively preventing the fire from spreading to adjacent structures.
“Firefighters subsequently conducted mop-up operations and safety inspections to ensure no remaining hazards existed at the location.
“The operation concluded completely at 10:37 PM,” according to the statement.
The operation was commanded by Senior Fire Officer I (PBK I) Jakri Bahar alongside Operations Commander, Assistant Fire Chief (PPgB) Deblie Mamoi.
Seven Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) personnel and two Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB) officers provided crucial support during the operation.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
