KOTA KINABALU: The success story of the local social enterprise Kelarai Kraft has been documented in the book “Zero to Hero”.
Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister, Datuk Ceaser Mandela Malakun, stated that this publication is significant as an inspiration for future generations, in addition to highlighting the role of social enterprises in community development.
“We are delighted that stories like this can be published; not only do we get to see a successful female entrepreneur, but we also want to share the story of this enterprise with the world,” he said.
He said this when met after officiating the launch of the book “Zero to Hero”: Kelarai Kraft – The Journey of a Successful Social Enterprise) in conjunction with the Kota Kinabalu International Book Fair 2026 (PBAKK 2026) at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC) here on Thursday, September 24, 2026.
Also present were IDS Chief Executive Officer Datuk Ts Dr Ramzah Dambul; IDS Chief Operating Officer Datin Hajah Hasnah Samsudin; UMS Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni) Dr Raman Noordin; Associate Professor Dr Azaze @ Azizi Abdul Adis (Deputy Dean of Student Affairs and Alumni); UMS Press Director Prof. Dr Patricia Matanjun; Director of Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (Sabah Branch) Mdm Jennitah Noordin; Sabah State Education Department Director Haji Abidin Haji Marjan and Mdm Janeble of Kelarai Kraft.
This book, published by Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), chronicles the journey of the community social enterprise Kelarai Kraft in creating economic opportunities, empowering women, and adding new value to the cultural heritage of the people of Sabah.
The production of the book also involved collaboration with the Institute for Development Studies (IDS) in terms of research and data documentation.
Mandela stated that we often see finished woven products and may be drawn to their patterns and intricate craftsmanship. Yet, behind every piece lie the hands that wove it, skills honed over years, and the time dedicated to its creation.
“That is why I am delighted that the story of Kelarai Kraft has been published as a book. It offers us a chance to get to know the people behind the work—specifically Puan Emily and the community of weavers working alongside her,” he said.
Mandela noted that while we frequently speak of supporting small entrepreneurs, we also need to listen to their experiences—how they started, the challenges they faced, and the support that proved truly beneficial.
“Stories like this help us gain a better understanding of these matters. I would like to congratulate Puan Emily and all the Kelarai Kraft weavers,” he said.
He also extended his congratulations to Associate Professor Dr. Bamini KPD Balakrishnan and the co-authors who documented this journey.
“My thanks also to UMS, IDS, and everyone who helped bring this book to fruition,” he said, expressing hope that the book would be read not merely as a story of a successful enterprise, but also as a tribute to the skills and effort of the people who create each woven piece.
