KOTA KINABALU: Media serves a crucial function as a platform for delivering accurate and timely information, thereby aiding in the development of an informed community.
In this regard, Associate Professor Dr. Haryati Abdul Karim, a Senior Lecturer at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), emphasized that media practitioners must be cautious in selecting the issues they choose to report.
She noted that each choice can significantly impact society or the community, the law, and the media’s own reputation.
Haryati stated that in addition to educating the public through reporting on current issues, the media is responsible for conveying verified information, acting as a watchdog, and providing a forum for discussion.
“Moreover, the media should give a voice to marginalized groups, including persons with disabilities (PWD).
“When reporting a government announcement, newspapers (media) must seek public reactions… there needs to be a balance where the public can participate in the nation’s development process,” she said.
Haryati said this in her presentation at a basic journalism course hosted by the Sabah Government Workers’ Cooperative Berhad (KOPEKS) today.
The program was attended by KOPEKS Chairman Datuk Dr. Saat Awang Damit and CEO Buvil Angkui.
Haryati also shared best practices for enhancing the media’s role within the community.
She mentioned that this includes maintaining an open and non-selective attitude towards issue selection and establishing a special column for the voices of the people.
“This allows the community to have a space to voice their grievances or interests,” she said.
Haryati emphasized the importance of media acting fairly and objectively, stating that every news story should present two sides – the people/community and the authorities.
“To be a widely accepted newspaper, it is essential to provide balanced coverage to all races, and avoid exclusives that touch on religious and cultural sensitivities,” she said.
Meanwhile, Haryati welcomed the KOPEKS initiative to publish ‘Kinabalu Media’, which she described as the first community-based newspaper in Sabah.
