KOTA KINABALU: The vision of a true “Borneo Bloc” has long lingered in East Malaysian political discourse, yet its full potential remains unrealized.
While Sarawak’s political consolidation under Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) has granted Kuching unprecedented leverage in Putrajaya, Sabah’s influence has repeatedly been diluted by internal division and reliance on Peninsular alliances.
The recent discussions between Parti Warisan president Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal, Sabah STAR leader Datuk Seri Jeffrey Kitingan, and KDM chief Prescilla Peter present a crucial turning point.
As Shafie rightly emphasized, the prerequisite to standing shoulder-to-shoulder with Sarawak under a grand Bornean banner is first consolidating Sabah’s local political landscape.
Sabah cannot expect equal partnership in a Pan-Borneo alliance if its own 25 parliamentary seats are fragmented or surrendered to West Malaysian proxies.
A Trans-Borneo Partnership of Equals
Leveraging Resource Wealth: Combined, Sabah and Sarawak anchor the nation’s vast oil and gas reserves, rich agricultural sectors, and strategic maritime borders.
Yet, national decision-making has historically treated East Malaysia as secondary based solely on parliamentary seat counts rather than economic contribution.
A cohesive Borneo coalition across all 56 parliamentary seats in East Malaysia would compel any prospective federal government to negotiate on equal terms.
Enforcing MA63 Deliberations: From Sabah’s 40% net revenue entitlement to constitutional guarantees over education, health, and infrastructure development, regional rights are far easier to postpone when local leaders answer to Peninsular party whips.
A unified Bornean banner ensures that constitutional commitments are non-negotiable prerequisites for Putrajaya’s stability.
Institutionalizing Local Identity: Aligning Sabah and Sarawak under a common regional political umbrella transforms the political dynamic from transactional political patronage into a permanent structural barrier against central overreach.
Uniting Warisan, STAR, and KDM inside Sabah is the foundational cornerstone. By fortifying the home front first, Sabah can finally step forward not as a supplicant to federal power, but as a co-equal architect of a united Borneo Bloc alongside Sarawak.
