KOTA KINABALU: A sprinkler system helped limit the spread of a fire at the food court within Bataras Hypermarket Kolombong, aiding efforts to control the blaze that occurred on Wednesday.
The fire began around 11:45 AM in a kitchen stall and rapidly moved into the building’s ventilation system, damaging roughly 30 percent of the area.
According to a representative from the Sabah Fire and Rescue Department’s Operations Center, crews from the Lintas Fire and Rescue Station were dispatched immediately after an emergency call was received through the MERS999 hotline.
The fire engine reached the site four minutes later and began operations using a 400-foot hose linked to a nearby hydrant.
“The sprinkler system in the building helped bring the fire under control before firefighters arrived, allowing them to focus on preventing any further spread,” the spokesperson said.
Support was also provided by personnel from the Penampang and Kota Kinabalu Fire and Rescue Stations, bringing the total number of responders to 45.
No injuries were reported. The fire was brought under control by 12:29 PM and fully extinguished by 1:35 PM.
The operation also included coordination with the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) and SESB.
