PENAMPANG: The Sugandoi competition is more than just a singing contest; it serves as a platform to uplift the arts and culture of the Kadazandusun community, ensuring they continue to be appreciated and passed down to the younger generation.
Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister, Datuk Ceaser Mandela Malakun, stated that the participation of young people in this competition demonstrates that Kadazandusun culture remains vibrant and cherished.
“I am very proud to witness the participation of the youth tonight, and I hope competitions like this will continue to serve as a venue to discover new talent and nurture a generation that is not only talented but also takes pride in their own identity and culture,” he said.
He made these remarks during the opening ceremony of the Sugandoi competition, held in conjunction with the 2026 Kampung Pogunon level Kaamatan Festival celebration at the St Joseph Church Open Hall, Pogunon, on Friday night.
His speech was read by Gundohing Dennis Gompion.
Also present were the organising chairman of the 2026 Kampung Pogunon Kaamatan Festival, Gundohing Stanislaus Dumalin, who is also the chairman of the Kampung Pogunon Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK); Kampung Pogunon Village Head, Gundohing Jefry Lojitin; and the Sugandoi Competition chairman, Gundohing Adrian Modoit.
While wishing all participants the best of luck, Mandela urged them to deliver their best performances with confidence and enthusiasm.
“Winning or losing is not the primary measure; rather, the courage to step forward and showcase our community’s art and culture is something truly worthy of pride,” he said.
Meanwhile, Mandela, who is also an appointed State Assemblyman (ADUN), noted that Kaamatan is a highly significant celebration for the people of Sabah.
“Beyond symbolising gratitude for the harvest, Kaamatan serves as a platform to strengthen unity, foster closer ties, and cultivate a spirit of togetherness within the community,” he said.
Mandela extended his congratulations to the organising committee and all parties who contributed to the success of the event.
“May the Kampung Pogunon Kaamatan Festival continue to serve as a platform for strengthening local unity and instilling a love for culture among the younger generation,” he said.
