KOTA KINABALU: Former Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Dr Salleh Said Keruak emphasised that securing the backing of the silent majority could play a decisive role in shaping the results of the upcoming state elections in Johor and Negeri Sembilan.
He noted that political parties must acknowledge a significant shift in the electoral environment.
“The electorate now includes a larger number of young and first-time voters,” he observed.
“Meanwhile, the base of staunch party loyalists is slowly shrinking, while the group of undecided or less vocal voters—the silent majority—is expanding. Gaining their trust could very well tip the balance in an election.”
In a recent Facebook post, Salleh pointed out that voters are increasingly concerned with practical matters such as economic stability, living costs, job availability, governance quality, leadership integrity, and long-term prospects.
“People also expect their elected officials to stay engaged and accountable throughout their term—not just show up during campaigns and vanish afterward,” he said.
Salleh, the Sabah UMNO treasurer, highlighted an added layer of complexity: alliances that exist at the federal level may face off against each other in state races, creating unusual dynamics on the ground.
Given this, he urged all parties to conduct their campaigns with professionalism and restraint.
“Discussions should center on state-specific challenges, policy ideas, and concrete solutions—not personal attacks or efforts to stir conflict,” he stressed.
He warned that in today’s social media landscape, a single poorly considered statement can quickly spread, spark tensions, and lead to divisions that persist well beyond election day.
While healthy competition is essential in a democracy, Salleh added, political maturity means contesting on the basis of policies, track records, and leadership qualities—without eroding mutual respect or damaging collaborative relationships.
“In the end,” he concluded, “election outcomes won’t hinge only on traditional party supporters. They’ll be shaped by new voters and the silent majority, who are seeking trustworthy leaders, realistic solutions, and a real dedication to serving the public.”
