SLIPPERY WHEN WET: Pasar Kim Fung Renovation Turns Hazardous, Council Urged to Act

By Majangkim Office

SANDAKAN:  Barely weeks after its much-touted reopening, Pasar Kim Fung (Mile 4) is already in distress. What was meant to be a fresh start for the market—thanks to renovations spearheaded by Sandakan MP Vivian Wong—has quickly turned into a public safety concern.

The upgrades, which include covered parking, water pipe replacements, and five industrial ceiling fans, were welcomed by traders and patrons alike. However, the celebration has been dampened—literally—by severely clogged three-inch manhole pipes, causing water to pool across the aisles.

The situation is particularly alarming given the market’s core demographic: patrons aged between 55 and 70. Yet, there are still no visible warning signs, not even a basic “Slippery When Wet” notice.

ADUN Calvin Chong has raised the issue publicly, warning that the absence of basic safety measures is a lawsuit waiting to happen. With hundreds of visitors passing through daily, the risk of a slip-and-fall incident is no longer hypothetical—it is imminent.

We call on the Sandakan Municipal Council to treat this as an urgent matter. Corrective action must be taken immediately before an avoidable tragedy occurs on council premises.
