Voters becoming more discerning, assessing candidates beyond mere appearances

KOTA KINABALU: Today’s voters are more astute, evaluating candidates not just on their speeches or popularity, but on their actual contributions and measurable outcomes, stated former Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Dr Salleh Said Keruak.

He said that many individuals aspire to become candidates, each driven by their own motivations.

“Some genuinely aim to serve, while others seek power and status. The public has the right to evaluate them.

“Some articulate their thoughts well but deliver little. Others may be less vocal yet work tirelessly to assist the community, NGOs, and youth,” he expressed in his recent Facebook update.

Salleh, the current Usukan assemblyman, cautioned the public to be wary of candidates who focus solely on self-promotion.

“Frequent appearances at public events do not necessarily indicate true dedication.

“Genuine leaders engage, listen, and maintain a connection with the community — rather than delegating everything to staff or representatives,” he emphasized.

He pointed out that the public desires leaders who invest their time and effort in helping communities and youth, rather than those who merely solicit support.

Ultimately, Salleh remarked that the public evaluates both the candidate and their party. Opt for those who are genuinely committed to service, not those who merely feign concern.
