TAWAU: The sales tax on petroleum products, which contributes more than RM1 billion each year, is a legacy of the Warisan administration, said Warisan president Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal.
“It is not accurate to say that Warisan did nothing to enhance the state’s revenue during its administration.
“In fact, the sales tax revenue from petroleum products that the current GRS government is enjoying is an initiative of the Warisan party,” he remarked.
Mohd Shafie said this in his speech at the opening of Warisan’s Annual General Assembly here on Sunday.
Later, speaking to reporters, Mohd Shafie said the Kinabatangan and Segama Lahad Datu regions have been recognised for their significant potential in developing two new dams aimed at resolving water supply challenges in Sabah.
He said that this initiative is part of their agenda should they assume control of the government following the upcoming State Election (PRN).
Mohd Shafie acknowledged that while the implementation of this proposal may take time, it is anticipated to provide a long-term solution to the water supply issues.
“We recognise that the Kinabatangan River is among the longest rivers in Sabah, and studies indicate that its water resources are adequate for construction purposes,” he noted.
In addition to ensuring a reliable and treated water supply, the dam site will also feature a water treatment plant to guarantee the safety of the water for consumption, he added.
Mohd Shafie further mentioned that the dam project would also produce electricity, thereby enhancing energy generation to meet the increasing demands within the state.
“At present, many areas in Sabah, including the state capital, are experiencing water supply issues due to inadequate output from existing water treatment plants and a high level of non-revenue water,” he explained.
“Thus, we are optimistic that this plan will come to fruition in the future.” Additionally, Warisan intends to reinstate the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education in Sabah, Mohd Shafie added.
