KOTA KINABALU: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) in Sabah has arrested the president of a non-governmental organization (NGO) on suspicion of misusing authority related to the embezzlement of approximately RM2 million allocated for the construction of a hall.
According to sources, the man, who is in his 60s, was apprehended around 10 AM while providing a statement at the MACC Sabah office.
Initial investigations revealed that the suspect allegedly committed the offense in 2022 by misappropriating funds received from the Ministry of Finance for the construction of a cultural hall and gallery in the state.
The suspect is also believed to have submitted the application and executed the construction project without the approval of the Supreme Council members of the organization.
Director of MACC Sabah, Datuk Mohd Fuad Bee Basrah, confirmed the arrest and stated that the case is being investigated under Section 23 of the MACC Act 2009.
He mentioned that the suspect is expected to be charged in the Kota Kinabalu Special Corruption Court on Thursday.
