SANDAKAN: Four traders at the night market here faced penalties after being found in violation of the Weights and Measures Act for not adhering to the established regulations on Thursday.
Azdy Zukkry John, the Chief Enforcement Officer of the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) in Sandakan, said that these traders would be penalised under the Weights and Measures Act 1972.
“Inspections on September 9 revealed that each trader was using a non-verified spring scale for trade purposes.
“Each trader involved was fined RM200. A total of 102 premises inspection statements were issued during the night market operation.
“The inspections focused on compliance with the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act (AKHAP) 2011 and the Weights and Measures Act 1972,” he said in a statement today.
Azdy Zukkry noted that the inspections particularly targeted fruit traders, especially seasonal durian sellers, as well as vegetable vendors in open areas near the Sandakan Public Market.
Additionally, he mentioned that since early January, KPDN Sandakan has inspected 5,399 business premises, resulting in 158 cases.
“The total value of seizures from these cases amounts to RM2,743,559.24, and the total fines issued are RM44,300. Furthermore, since the beginning of 2024, two cases have been prosecuted in court, with both resulting in convictions and a total fine of RM24,000,” explained Azdy Zukkry.
He added that from January 1 to September 13 this year, KPDN Sandakan received 113 consumer complaints.
“Out of these 113 complaints, 106 (93.8 percent) have been investigated and resolved, while the remainder is still pending,” he said.
