According to him, there were rumours of late suggesting that the crooked bridge would be demolished.

“There is nothing wrong with building a new bridge that is safer, but I am of the opinion that the existing crooked bridge should be maintained. This is because this crooked bridge has its own charm and uniqueness.

“This district is famous for its tourist attractions such as the Rumah Terbalik (Upside Down House) in Tamparuli and also paragliding activities, so I believe the uniqueness of the Sungai Damit crooked bridge can add value to tourist attractions in the Tuaran district,” he said in a statement today.

Daim said the proposal needs to be viewed holistically, especially considering the positive impact on the tourism sector in the long term.

The construction of the 104-metre Sungai Damit Bridge began in April 2019.

The bridge should have been fully completed by the end of 2020 before the structural deflection of the bridge was detected.

According to initial expectations, the bridge will benefit about 7,000 villagers who live there.

It includes the residents of Village (Kg) Sawah, Sungai Damit, Bintangor, Pitas, Bantayan, Damat, and Bontoi.
