KOTA KINABALU: Datuk Seri Dr Salleh Said Keruak, the former Communications and Multimedia Minister, has called on authorities to permit US gospel artist Israel Houghton’s concert in Kota Kinabalu to move forward provided that security concerns can be effectively addressed.
He emphasized that the state police chief’s security reservations merit serious consideration, noting that law enforcement officials possess the expertise to evaluate potential threats to public safety.
Yet Salleh stressed that “comprehensive considerations” must factor in Sabah’s demonstrated commitment to religious harmony.
“Houghton performs gospel music and maintains a devoted following within Sabah’s Christian population.
“Sabah has consistently demonstrated religious tolerance and harmonious relations among its varied populations. These values deserve continued protection.
“Should security challenges prove manageable, authorities should prioritize facilitating a responsible and peaceful concert experience rather than denying it outright,” he said in his latest Facebook post.
Houghton is an American gospel and contemporary Christian performer, composer and instrumentalist, recognized for leading Israel & New Breed.
He has earned eight Grammy Awards, including a recent honor for Best Contemporary Christian Music Album at the 2026 Grammy Awards.
On Monday, Sabah police chief Jauteh Dikun noted that concert promoters had not yet filed an official request with the state administration, despite having already publicized event dates, locations and admission fees.
Jauteh indicated that police would recommend the Sabah government delay Houghton’s concert should organizers submit an official request
