KOTA KINABALU: Two medical consultants will deliver men’s health talks at a prostate cancer awareness programme at Taman Ujana Rimba Tropika here this Saturday (September 19).
They are Gleneagles Hospital Kota Kinabalu Consultant Urologist Dr Suriaraj Karppaya, who will deliver a talk titled “Know Your Prostate: Early Detection Saves Lives”, and Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) I Urologist Dr Sun Kian Joe, who will present “10 Myths About Prostate Cancer.”
Programme organising committee chairman Lawrence Thien said the programme, which begins at 6am, is organised in collaboration with Gleneagles, the Rotary Club of Kota Kinabalu (RCKK) and QEH1.
He said the programme aims to raise public awareness, particularly among men, about the importance of early detection of the disease.
Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, observed every September, aims to increase public understanding of the disease.
Four groups will perform dances dressed entirely in blue to add vibrancy to the programme before the talks begin at 8am.
The event will then continue at Por Kee Restaurant, Taman Fortuna, from 9.45am with a fellowship session and breakfast and lunch, which will also feature a celebration of the Mid-Autumn Festival.
Lawrence expressed hope that the programme would increase public awareness and understanding of prostate cancer.
He added that it would also encourage more men to undergo screenings and take early detection measures, enabling treatment to be provided more effectively.
Meanwhile, Dr Sun is a consultant at the QEH1 Urology Department and has extensive experience in related treatment.
He obtained his medical degree (MUDr) from Charles University in Prague, followed by the MRCS (Ireland) qualification and the prestigious FRCS (Urology) from Glasgow.
His clinical training included several major tertiary referral centres, including QEH, Sarawak General Hospital, Selayang Hospital, as well as the Institute of Urology and Nephrology at Kuala Lumpur Hospital.
In addition to his clinical practice, he is also actively involved in public health through prostate cancer awareness campaigns and has served as a speaker at urology conferences at both national and regional levels.
