KOTA KINABALU: The Federal Constitution is set to be amended to allow for an increase in parliamentary seats for Sabah and Sarawak, in line with the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).
However, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim stated that he cannot confirm whether the increase in the representation ratio for parliamentary seats in Sabah and Sarawak will be implemented before the upcoming General Election (GE).
According to a report by Sinar Harian, he said that the Cabinet has already made a decision on the matter, and the Election Commission (EC) has been informed to begin discussions.
“It requires consensus, and in terms of the process, I do not want to interfere with the constitutional process. But what is important is that a decision has been made, and the EC has been informed,” he said.
Anwar made these remarks at a press conference after chairing the Meeting of the Action Council for the Implementation of the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MTPMA63) for the year 2026 here today.
Earlier, he was asked whether the expected increase in the ratio would be implemented before or after the upcoming GE.
