PAPAR – The Parti Kesejahteraan Demokratik Masyarakat (KDM) has announced its decision to withdraw support from the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) government.
KDM President, Priscella Peter, stated that this decision was made during the party’s Supreme Council meeting at their annual gathering held here on Saturday.
“Today, we held the KDM annual meeting to determine the direction of our party. We have also made several decisions during my speech earlier.
“What is crucial is that in preparation for the upcoming general election, KDM, along with the Supreme Council, has decided to operate independently of the GRS government,” she said at a press conference here on Saturday.
Further commenting, Priscella noted that while this decision was not an easy one, it is essential to demonstrate the party’s direction to the public and the grassroots of KDM.
“This decision is indeed a heavy one, but what matters to us is that we can show the people and the grassroots that we have a direction for them.
“What happened after the last election, I believe, certainly impacted our grassroots.
“Thus, the steps and decisions we are making today are solely to demonstrate that we do not only act when elections are near or when the general election is called.
“On the contrary, we need to take action beforehand to show our commitment and regain the trust of the grassroots so that the public does not perceive our party as one that only acts during elections or when Parliament is dissolved,” she stated.
KDM now has a representative in the Sabah State Assembly, namely the ADUN of Paginatan, Datuk Rusdin Riman.
Following the recent State Election (PRN), Rusdin was appointed as the Chairman of the Sabah Credit Corporation.
He secured the DUN Paginatan seat in the 17th state election with a majority of 736 votes in a contest involving 10 candidates.
Meanwhile, Priscella stated that KDM is prepared to establish new alliances with local parties, including Warisan and STAR.
However, she noted that discussions are still in the preliminary stages and no final decision has been made.
