TAWAU: The Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) has proposed the formation of a Flood Monitoring and Management Committee for Tawau to enhance coordination among agencies in tackling the increasingly frequent flooding problems in the area.
The Chairman of Zone Six GRS, Tan Sri Liew Yun Fah, stated that the proposed committee should include the Tawau Municipal Council (MPT), the Public Works Department (JKR), the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (JPS), and other relevant agencies to effectively coordinate flood mitigation efforts.
He mentioned that the Chief Minister, Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, has also emphasized the importance of leaders being present on the ground to assess the actual situation and ensure that immediate assistance is provided to affected residents.
Liew, who is also the President of the Parti Harapan Rakyat Sabah (PHRS), indicated that he plans to meet with Hajiji and the Sabah Finance Minister, Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun, soon to discuss both short-term and long-term solutions to the flooding issues in Tawau.
He noted that flooding is currently impacting many areas, including Tawau town, especially when heavy rain coincides with high tide events.
“The establishment of this special committee is expected to expedite the coordination of actions, monitoring, and implementation of flood mitigation projects, thereby reducing the impact on local residents.
“We will also provide assistance through the Community Development Leaders (PPM) led by Samsiah Usman to deliver aid to those in need in Tawau,” he said.
