SEMPORNA: Sabah has a competitive advantage due to its rich cultural heritage and world-class biodiversity, alongside communities that uphold the values and traditions of their heritage as the foundation for sustainable tourism development.
Minister of Tourism, Culture, and Environment of Sabah, Datuk Jafry Arifin, stated that the combination of these three elements is a distinct advantage not found in many other destinations worldwide.
He urged the entire community, especially the younger generation, to act as guardians of both cultural and environmental heritage.
“Preserving culture is not solely the government’s responsibility. The same goes for environmental stewardship. It requires active community involvement as the true custodians of this heritage.
“If our culture is preserved, our identity will remain strong. If the environment is protected, our sources of livelihood and the tourism sector will continue to thrive.
“When both aspects progress together, we can not only maintain the relevance of this heritage but also transform it into a strategic strength that contributes to economic development, social well-being, and Sabah’s image on the global stage,” he said.
He made these remarks while speaking at the closing ceremony of the 31st Regatta Lepa Semporna here on Saturday.
Meanwhile, Jafry mentioned that his Ministry will remain committed to enhancing community-based tourism programs, cultural heritage preservation, and environmental conservation.
