True unity of local parties cannot be measured just by how frequently parties change to stay relevant

KOTA KINABALU: The recent call by UPKO President Datuk Ewon Benedict for Sabah’s local parties to unite under a single political banner deserves careful reflection.

Unity, in itself, is a commendable objective. However, genuine unity cannot be achieved merely by bringing together different parties under one coalition.

True unity must be founded on shared principles, consistency of purpose, and an unwavering commitment to defending Sabah’s constitutional rights and the welfare of its people.

Sabahans have witnessed political realignments and shifting alliances over many years.

While parties are entitled to review their strategies in response to changing circumstances, the public is equally entitled to ask whether those changes are guided by principle or political expediency.

The measure of a political party should not be how often it changes partners, but whether it has consistently stood for the interests of Sabah, upheld good governance, respected the mandate of the people, and pursued meaningful reforms.

If local parties seek to unite, they should first commit themselves to a clear and transparent common agenda that includes:

– The full and faithful implementation of constitutional safeguards affecting Sabah.

– Stronger state institutions and accountable governance.

– Protection of Sabah’s autonomy and legitimate rights within the Federation.

– Sustainable economic development that benefits ordinary Sabahans.

– Integrity, transparency, and responsible leadership.

Sabah does not simply need a larger coalition. It needs a coalition with a clear vision, principled leadership, and the courage to place the interests of Sabah above short-term political calculations.

Ultimately, the people should judge every political movement not by its slogans or alliances, but by its record, its consistency, and its willingness to deliver on the promises it makes.
