MCCC Sabah President Dexter Lau goes all out to transform this year’s ‘Annual Gala’ into a platform that promotes business opportunities for Sabah

KOTA KINABALU: Datuk Dexter Lau, who was elected as the President of the Malaysia–China Chamber of Commerce (MCCC) Sabah last year, is making significant efforts to attract substantial investments to Sabah and Malaysia.

To achieve this goal, he mentioned that MCCC Sabah has taken the initiative to host an extraordinary Annual Gala celebration this year.

“This event today is, as I mentioned earlier, extraordinary because we aim to play a role in shaping our economy by contributing to investments, while also serving as an attraction to strengthen the relationship between Chinese investors and Sabah,” he told reporters before the MCCC Annual Gala commenced on Saturday night.

According to Datuk Dexter, the majority of the people in Sabah are eager to see larger investments coming into the state.

“Having been part of the MCCC Chamber for several years, especially as a CEO of a corporate company, I have realized that before seeking investments or assistance from any country, it is crucial to understand their culture and the associated issues, as well as their relationships and cultural nuances.

“This year marks a complete turnaround for the Malaysia-China Chamber of Commerce Sabah, as we are not discussing business tonight. We will address that later.

“Instead, tonight we focus on building relationships. How do we build these relationships? We do so by understanding their culture and traditions.

“For instance, many governments and individuals seek investments, but there are numerous provinces and regions in China, each with distinct cultures. The reason we chose Peking Opera this time is that it is widely recognized and understood by many in the Chinese community.

“Understanding how their culture operates is essential. Only then can we establish a common language and engage in meaningful conversations. From that point onward, we can truly connect and communicate effectively.

Datuk Dexter stated that this is the reason the organizing committee has put in significant effort to ensure the success of this event – it marks a pivotal moment.

“Many people talk about Peking Opera, which is why we must strive to comprehend what has not been shared outside of China.

“Therefore, it is our responsibility today, as the Malaysia-China Chamber of Commerce Sabah, to showcase everything so that it not only serves the business community,” he remarked.

So far, Dexter mentioned that this event has already garnered a viewership of hundreds of millions within a Chamber of Commerce.

“What am I planning to do? I will conduct a live telecast from Sabah. Additionally, I want to promote Sabah to the world, encouraging them to visit.

“The more visitors we attract, the more businesses will benefit as a chamber, and everyone will gain from it as well,” he added.
