Shooting During Suspect Arrest, Police Officer Injured

TAWAU: An attempt to apprehend a man ended in a shooting incident at the Bazhong commercial center here yesterday morning, injuring both a police officer and the suspect.

The incident occurred around 10:45 AM when two police officers on crime prevention patrol on Jalan Persisiran Pantai stopped a white Perodua Viva driven by a man in his 30s.

However, the suspect fled, leaving his vehicle behind, before being chased and successfully apprehended in the commercial area.

Acting Tawau District Police Chief, Supt Champin Piuh, stated that during the arrest process, the suspect refused to cooperate and acted aggressively, leading to a struggle.

“During the struggle, a firearm belonging to the officer accidentally discharged, hitting the suspect’s left hand.

“Another officer who assisted was also injured in the right thigh,” he said in a statement.

Both injured individuals were sent to Tawau Darrah Hospital for further treatment.

A further inspection of the suspect’s vehicle revealed a substance suspected to be methamphetamine, and the man was also found to possess identification documents belonging to another individual.

The case is being investigated under relevant legal provisions, and further investigations are ongoing.
