KOTA KINABALU: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission has taken into custody ex-army chief Hafizuddeain Jantan along with his two spouses as part of an investigation into an army procurement tender project.
As reported by FMT, MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki has confirmed the arrests. “As of 7pm (on Wednesday), we have apprehended the former army chief and his two wives,” Azam stated.
Additionally, a married couple believed to be involved in the misappropriation of RM2.4 million was also arrested on Tuesday.
Hafizuddeain arrived at the MACC headquarters in Putrajaya this afternoon concerning an ongoing investigation into allegations of an army procurement cartel.
Last month, Defence Minister Khaled Nordin mentioned that Hafizuddeain’s elevation to armed forces chief had been delayed due to the corruption investigation against him.
The position of army chief has been filled by Azhan Othman, effective January 1. Hafizuddeain was placed on leave following allegations of significant cash deposits into the bank accounts of a senior military officer and his relatives.
These funds were reportedly transferred from accounts of companies that had received military contracts.
MACC is also looking into the owners of 26 companies linked to these contracts, having noted that several firms have consistently secured high-value military contracts since 2023.
On Tuesday, MACC secured a five-day remand order for 17 company directors suspected of bribing senior army officers in return for supply and maintenance contracts.
