KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Umno Treasurer Datuk Seri Dr Salleh Said Keruak says yesterday’s call by Umno Youth chief Dr. Akmal Saleh for Umno to quit the unity government reflects political calculations shaped by developments in Peninsular Malaysia and should not define nor dictate Sabah’s political direction.
He stressed that Sabah operates within a different political and social reality.
“For the people of Sabah, the priority is unity, stability, and effective governance in a diverse state.
“Unity within Sabah’s newly formed government must remain the overriding agenda. Political stability is essential to ensure continuity, delivery, and long-term development planning,” he said in his Facebook post.
The former Sabah Chief Minister said
At this juncture, Sabah must remain focused on governing, developing, and securing its rightful entitlements, without being distracted by political polemics originating outside the state.
“Sabah’s core focus is development and the firm pursuit of genuine autonomy and full state rights, including the 40 percent revenue entitlement, in accordance with established agreements and constitutional principles,” he added.
Salleh said Sabah UMNO should exercise political autonomy in determining its stance and direction.
“Decisions affecting Sabah should be guided by Sabah’s interests, not by national-level debates that do not reflect local priorities,” he said.
