TAWAU: As the official announcement of candidates from Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) and Pakatan Harapan (PH) for the 17th Sabah State Election draws near, the political climate in all 73 State Constituencies (DUN) is becoming more vibrant, filled with numerous speculations and party preparations.
The Chairman of GRS, Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, has previously indicated that the negotiations regarding seat distribution with PH have been concluded, and an official announcement is anticipated shortly.
Political analyst, Mohd. Zaki Harry Susanto, anticipates that the GRS+PH coalition will probably retain its current majority while also targeting several new constituencies that could be successfully contested.
“Attention is now shifting to several strategic seats, including DUN Merotai, which is considered one of the important areas on the east coast. This DUN is currently held by Sarifuddin Hata from the Sabah Heritage Party, who won the seat in the last two elections.
“As we approach this election, the name Datuk Ruji Ubi, former Secretary-General (KSU) of several federal ministries, is being mentioned as the most suitable candidate to represent GRS+PH against the incumbent from Warisan.
“Ruji, who is also a native of Merotai, is seen as capable of bringing a new approach with his extensive experience in central government administration.”
Zaki is also confident that the people of Merotai are now more open to accepting new candidates like Ruji, who has been recognised for his capabilities by PMX to serve in his hometown.
“The presence of figures like Ruji is believed to strengthen the relationship between the state government and the federal government, ensuring continuity in development and bringing benefits to the people in the area. However, Ruji will need support from all GRS leaders in DUN Merotai to solidify grassroots backing,” Zaki added.
Meanwhile, Warisan is expected to continue backing Sarifuddin to defend his seat in the relevant DUN.
“For the voters in Merotai, the main issues of focus include rural development, job opportunities, and basic amenities. Residents hope that the chosen candidate this time can bring significant change and be closer to the central government to expedite the implementation of local projects.
“If Datuk Ruji Ubi’s name is confirmed as the GRS+PH candidate, the contest in Merotai is anticipated to be one of the most intense and widely followed in the 17th Sabah PRN,” Zaki added.
Overall, 73 DUN seats are set to witness open competition, with a primary focus on areas that could determine the balance of power between GRS+PH and the opposition after this election.
