KOTA KINABALU: Tambunan, located at the foothills of the Crocker Range, has produced many outstanding political figures.
Among the notable personalities from Tambunan who have made their mark in the political arena are the late Datuk James Ongkili, Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan, Datuk Seri Dr Maximus Ongkili, and Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey Kitingan.
Pairin and Maximus have both retired from politics, while Jeffrey is currently at the peak of his political career.
However, the emergence of another young and capable political figure brings new hope to the Kadazandusun community, particularly in Tambunan, which has long awaited the arrival of a new generation of leaders in the area.
The esteemed leader in question is Dato Victor P. Paut.
Victor, who hails from Kg Lintuhun Tambunan, began his political journey in 1994.
Victor, 59, gained prominence in politics when he was entrusted with spearheading the Tambunan division of the Gagasan Rakyat Sabah party in 2023.
Recently, the Tambunan Gagasan Rakyat chief took the time to share his meaningful vision and inspiration, particularly for the people of Tambunan.
According to Victor, Tambunan is basically an agricultural and tourism district.
“Tambunan is also renowned for its entertainment culture industry, earning the nickname as a hub for producing many legendary and famous singers who have won numerous singing competitions both domestically and internationally,” he said.
Therefore, he aims to aggressively develop these sectors.
“Ideally, my vision is to transform Tambunan into an agricultural hub akin to Hokkaido in Japan and to elevate its tourism sector to be as remarkable as Bali in Indonesia and Dubai in the UAE.
“From a cultural and artistic perspective, I want Tambunan to continue being a powerhouse. All the sectors I mentioned will undoubtedly create numerous job opportunities and boost Tambunan’s economy, ensuring that young people do not migrate out of the area,” he stated.
Regarding youth development, Victor hopes to contribute to nurturing and advancing the next generation of leaders in the area.
“I want to see the potential of the youth harnessed to sustain the economic vibrancy of Tambunan and its surroundings.
I am doing my best to bring as much development as possible. I have numerous visions and plans for Tambunan.
Victor also hopes to see Tambunan transform from a village into a city in the future.
“There are many improvements needed in Tambunan and numerous areas that can be developed. Most importantly, we must eradicate poverty,” he added.
On the political front, Victor mentioned that he is prepared to participate in the upcoming state elections.
“I am ready to take part in the upcoming PRN17 if the President of the Gagasan Rakyat Sabah party nominates me as a candidate,” he said.
