Embrace differences for the sake of stability and unity – Salleh

KOTA KINABALU: Stability is achieved when the citizens of this nation manage their differences calmly and with mutual respect, said former Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Dr Salleh Said Keruak.

He noted that some individuals believe that a country can only be stable if everyone supports a single party or viewpoint.

“In reality, stability does not imply the absence of conflict; rather, it signifies the existence of a fair system to resolve differences peacefully.

“Unity does not mean that everyone must think alike. It is about sharing common goals—such as justice, peace, and progress—even if the paths to achieve them may differ,” he expressed in his latest Facebook post.

Salleh, who is also the assemblyman for Usukan, emphasised that the nation thrives despite its citizens having diverse religions, ethnicities, or political views.

“They collaborate by focusing on what unites them rather than what divides them,” he remarked.

He pointed out that a country that suppresses freedom may appear “calm”, but such stability is often fragile.

“When the voices of the people are silenced, pressure can erupt at any moment.

“In contrast, a nation that allows differences and possesses strong institutions is more resilient. Its stability is rooted in trust, not fear,” he stated.

Salleh also outlined the foundations of stability, which include freedom of expression, fair laws, and the accountability of all parties involved.

“When the system is trusted by the people, the nation will stand firm,” he added.

He stressed that unity is built when the populace, including leaders, is willing to listen, respect differing opinions, and seek common ground for the greater good.

“Although we come from different backgrounds, when we unite and support one another, we become stronger and more resilient,” he added.
