KOTA KINABALU: Malaysia has lost one of its most respected and soft-spoken statesmen. Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, the nation’s fifth Prime Minister and a symbol of humility and moderation, passed away peacefully on April 14, 2025, at 7:10 PM at the National Heart Institute (IJN) in Kuala Lumpur. He was 85. His son-in-law, former Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin, confirmed the news via social media.

Tun Abdullah led the nation from 2003 to 2009, following the long and influential tenure of Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad. He brought a distinct, softer style of governance—marked by inclusivity, moderation, and a sincere focus on the needs of everyday Malaysians.

He championed the fight against corruption through the National Integrity Plan and worked to improve the transparency and efficiency of public services. His vision of Islam Hadhari—a progressive, inclusive interpretation of Islam—resonated widely, earning him recognition both at home and abroad.

Before his premiership, Tun Abdullah served as Foreign Minister, gaining respect for his diplomatic finesse and commitment to regional cooperation. His calm demeanour and consensus-building approach made him a valued voice on the international stage.

Beyond politics, he was known for his humility, warmth, and deep concern for the well-being of others. His ability to connect with Malaysians from all walks of life earned him admiration and affection.

His leadership, often described as consultative and compassionate, brought a sense of unity during a pivotal period in the nation’s history. Even amid political and economic challenges, he remained true to his principles.

Tun Abdullah stepped down in 2009, leaving behind a legacy rooted in integrity, moderation, and the quiet strength of a leader who listened more than he spoke.

His passing leaves a profound void. He will be remembered not only for his contributions to national development but also for the grace and dignity with which he led.

Tun Abdullah will be laid to rest at the Warriors’ Mausoleum (Makam Pahlawan) at Masjid Negara, Kuala Lumpur, on Tuesday. His passing has prompted tributes from across the political spectrum and the region.

As Malaysia mourns, we honour a statesman who governed with compassion and conviction. May Allah SWT grant him eternal peace and place him among the righteous.

Al-Fatihah.
