KOTA KINABALU: The Chief of the Wiramuda STARSabah Exco, Jordan Jude Ellron, has called on road concession companies across Sabah to enhance their road maintenance efforts to ensure the safety and comfort of road users, particularly in urban and rural areas.
He emphasised that the condition of roads in many regions of Sabah, both urban and rural, is increasingly concerning due to inadequate regular maintenance.
“Potholed, uneven, and persistently damaged roads not only inconvenience users but also elevate the risk of accidents, especially for motorcyclists and small vehicles,” he said in a statement today.
Jordan, who is also the Nabawan Star Division chief, noted that the situation has worsened due to unpredictable weather changes, including heavy rainfall and frequent flooding affecting the state.
“Water accumulation on roads and soil erosion have led to numerous potholes and further deterioration of road surfaces,” he added.
“If not addressed promptly, this damage could escalate and pose significant dangers to road users,” he warned.
He also highlighted that road accidents often result from drivers attempting to avoid or navigate around potholes.
This situation not only causes vehicle damage but can also lead to injuries and fatalities among road users, he said.
“Such incidents can be prevented if maintenance is carried out as scheduled and concession companies fulfil their responsibilities effectively.
“Taking these actions can not only prevent loss of life but also protect concession companies from legal repercussions due to negligence in road maintenance,” he asserted.
“We frequently receive complaints regarding damaged roads in various areas,” he added.
