KOTA KINABALU: Warisan is committed to defending the seats it secured in the last state elections, according to party president Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal.
“We will definitely contest all of them,” he said, as reported by the Borneo Post.
In the 16th Sabah state elections, Warisan successfully captured 23 out of the 46 contested seats.
However, Shafie remained noncommittal about whether his party would pursue all 73 seats in the upcoming elections, which are due by October next year.
He emphasised that the decision would hinge on the party’s “position, strength, and capacity.”
“What matters most is that we achieve victory when we compete,” he added.
Shafie also mentioned that Warisan has not yet made a decision regarding potential alliances with other parties, noting that historically, some parties have governed the state without forming coalitions.
For instance, Berjaya held power from 1975 to 1985, and Parti Bersatu Sabah governed from 1985 to 1990 without any alliances.
Shafie pointed out that this indicates a preference among Sabahans for single-party governance.
“However, if we do form an alliance, it will be with local parties,” he clarified.
In another topic, Shafie expressed Warisan’s support for any proposals regarding the redelineation of electoral boundaries in Sabah if they are presented in Parliament.
He highlighted that the size and voter population in certain constituencies, such as Kinabatangan and Lahad Datu, are significant factors in the discussion about adding new parliamentary seats in the state.
He noted that these areas are larger than the state of Perlis, yet they are represented by only one MP, while Perlis has three.
“The addition of parliamentary seats in Sabah is essential to enhance our ability to serve the people effectively,” the Semporna MP said during a media briefing here.
