KOTA KINABALU: It is always a good sign when new measures are taken to combat corruption in the public and private sectors, says social activist Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye.

He praised the recent announcement by MACC Chief Tan Sri Azam Baki about plans to enhance the reward system for exposing corruption in the civil service.

“Offering more incentives can encourage more government employees and whistleblowers to step forward with corruption-related information.

“This move can contribute to a more transparent and accountable government, which is crucial for good governance,” he said in a statement today.

Lee emphasised that apart from deterring corruption, reinforcing the rule of law, and gaining public trust, this initiative can also enhance the country’s international standing, attracting more foreign investors.

“By encouraging the reporting of corruption, the government emphasises the importance of following the law.

“All of this will benefit us, as long as we are mindful of potential drawbacks and take necessary precautions.

“There should be clear criteria for what constitutes reportable corruption and what qualifies for a reward to minimise false or frivolous reports,” he remarked.

He also highlighted the need to protect whistleblowers, some of whom may require psychological and legal assistance.

“Regular audits of the reward system are essential to ensure its proper and efficient functioning, as well as its fair application.

“Moreover, raising public awareness about the significance of reporting corruption and the mechanisms in place to safeguard and compensate whistleblowers through traditional and social media is crucial, he added.

Lee stressed the importance of establishing a balanced and just system.
