Prime Minister and MACC on the right track fighting corruption – Salleh

KOTA KINABALU: Former Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Dr Salleh Said Keruak fully supports Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Azam Baki’s statement that increasing civil servant salaries will not effectively combat corruption.

Salleh emphasised that corruption is driven by individuals lacking integrity and moral values, constituting only a small fraction of civil servants.

“The majority of them are honest as well as god-fearing.

“But if we do not remove the corrupted ones, then it might spread like cancer, he said in his latest Facebook post.

Salleh commended the efforts of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Azam Baki in addressing corruption as a crucial national issue that must not be overlooked.

On Monday, Azam Baki cautioned against simply raising the wages of civil servants without addressing deeper issues that create opportunities for corruption.

Azam said increasing civil servant salaries alone will not curb corruption, as low wages and poverty are not the main factors behind corruption in the civil service.
