TUARAN: The relevant parties have reached a point where they need to formulate a long-term strategy to fully utilise the fish harvesting event in the river, which implements the Tagal system for tourism purposes.
Former Mantob village chief Midin Lobintang said that the current practice, which sees each Tagal Committee in the respective villages setting the date and time for the fish harvesting event, is less effective in terms of tourism promotion.
“It would be better if the Tagal Committees along the Tuaran River in the Kiulu state constituency discussed when the appropriate time for the fish harvesting event is in order to determine the dates for the event in each Tagal area.
“The schedule or list of dates for the Tagal fish harvesting event can then be announced in newspapers or on social media, allowing tourists to choose the suitable date and time to come and observe and participate in the Tagal fish harvesting event,” he told Jesselton Times after participating in a recent fish harvesting event in the Tagal area of Mantob Village.
Midin also expressed confidence that many tourists would be interested in knowing about and participating in the traditional river fishing event or those allowed by the Tagal Committee.
Furthermore, he said that the programme can further promote the Tagal law system as one of the forms of customary village legislation that can preserve the sustainability of the river ecosystem, thus becoming a village eco-tourism product.
