KOTA BELUD: UMNO is still relevant among young people in Sabah, said Kota Belud UMNO chief Azuwan Marjan Norjan.
He said this was evident by the decision of more than 150 people, the majority of whom are young people, to join the party through the Kota Belud division.
Azuwan said this proves that UMNO is ‘a sacred party’ and has remained popular among the youth.
“This is a positive indication that our party still has supporters; there are still many who want to join this party, and UMNO’s door is always wide open,” he said in his speech at the opening of the UMNO pro-tem committee meeting for the Melungkut branch near here on Monday.
According to Azuwan, in order to attract more young people to join UMNO, a more holistic approach needs to be put in place for that group according to their tastes.
“This role can be played by the UMNO Youth and Puteri Movement with a more efficient approach in line with the tastes of the young people, whether through the organisation of sports programmes, education welfare, and so on,” he said.
According to Azwan, the task of approaching and enticing the 18-year-old voters is not solely on the shoulders of the youth or Puteri UMNO movements; it is the responsibility of all grassroots leaders.
In this regard, he said, the entire leadership of the division needs to focus and commit to ensure that they become party voters and build idealism so that they understand the true nature of UMNO’s struggle.
“Many of these members will mean nothing if efforts cannot be mobilised to mobilise them to be with the party’s agenda and translate it into paper.
“Make this pro tem committee’s meeting a stage to inject understanding into issues surrounding the environment.
“The most important thing is to find a new approach to gain and restore support and confidence in UMNO,” he said.
