SANDAKAN : Libaran will have a new landmark through the construction of a bridge that will be realised soon.

The bridge is part of the road construction project between Semawang to Kuala Gum-Gum.

Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate for Libaran, Datuk Suhaimi Nasir said the groundbreaking ceremony for the bridge was supposed to be held on November 15, but was postponed due to the 15th General Election (GE-15).

“If everyone has ever seen a road between Johor and Desaru, that is the bridge we will build here. The groundbreaking ceremony has been postponed due to GE-15, but will probably be held on December 15,” he said.

He said this while speaking at the Program Sentuhan Kasih with residents of Kampung Pangkalan Baru, Pekan Muhibbah, off Rancangan Sungai Manila, this morning.

Suhaimi said the construction of the road and bridge will simultaneously help develop the tourism industry in Sungai Manila.

He said, for that purpose, he and Sungai Manila assemblyman, Mokran Ingkat are working to complete infrastructure in the area including water supply, electricity and roads.

“We want to develop this place for ‘river cruise’ tourism. In the next five years, I hope this place will be one of the tourist destinations both for foreign and domestic visitors.

“We knew that the nature in Sungai Manila area has a lot to offer for outsiders to enjoy” he explained.

At the same time, Suhaimi hopes residents of Sungai Manila will continue their support for BN to lead the government to ensure that everything planned will be realised.

He explained that the effort cannot be realised overnight like making a request with Aladdin’s lamp.

“We will plan and make sure the plan is implemented. We want to drive the economy in Libaran which can have an impact on the population as a whole. But we (BN) need a mandate from the people on November 19,” he explained.
