Embrace the Constitution, Respect Agong – Salleh

KOTA KINABALU: Former Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Dr Salleh Said Keruak has called on the people, particularly politicians to embrace the supremacy of the Malaysian Constitution.

In making the call, he said the constitution clearly gives the power to Yang di-Pertuan Agong to appoint a Prime Minister.

“When Malaysia is facing the challenges of handling COVID-19, it is inappropriate for us to look for the Prime Minister with an SD.

“We should just respect the decision of Yang di-Pertuan Agong and move on to focus our efforts in the national recovery,” he said in his latest Facebook posting.

Salleh , who is State Assemblyman for Usukan, was commenting on the political analysis by Prof James Chin, an expert in Asian studies at the University of Tasmania in Australia, with regard to the appointment of Prime Minister.

Prof James Chin was quoted as saying earlier today that the Yang di-Pertuan Agong would select a new prime minister to form the next federal government if Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin steps down on Monday.

He asserted that the Parliament cannot be recalled at this point of time, and it is the King’s prerogative to pick the next prime minister.
