KOTA KINABALU: Sabah police have shot dead five members of the Abu Sayaf terrorist group at a squatter area near Taman Sri Arjuna, Beaufort at 11.27am on Monday.
Sabah Police Commissioner, Datuk Hazani Ghazali said that one of the suspect shot dead was the ‘sub leader’ of the terrorist group known as Mabar Binda, who is also in the wanted list by the Philippines’ government.
He said that three other suspects were known as Abhirsham Samsula @ Samseed, Jurakhdam Binda, Alsimar Sukarno, while one is yet to be identified. All the suspects are estimated to be between 20 and 40.
“With the defeat of the five members of the group, police is confident to have crippled one of the Abu Sayaf cell that has been hiding in Sabah, and have been carrying out ba’iah with the Daesh militant.
“Police also suspects that there are still remnants of the group which is in hiding in Malaysia, particularly in Sabah and we are investigating the matter,” he said in the press conference at the Sabah Police Contingent Headquarters in Kepayan, near here today.
