KOTA KINABALU: Former Works and Utilities Minister Tan Sri Abdul Ghani Gilong died early this morning at the age of 88.
This was confirmed by Sabah Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun through his social media posting today.
“It is sadly announced that our father/ kakie, Tan Sri Datuk Seri Panglima Abdul Ghani Gilong, aged 88 has returned to rahmatullah at 12.12 am at Queen 1, 6.3.2021.
“We pray for the soul of the deceased to be placed among the pious. May Allah shower mercy on the deceased. Innalilahiwainailahi Rojiun. Al-Fatihah,” said Masidi.
Ghani was born on May 30, 1932 to Gilong Rantau, a prominent trader in Ranau, and Bonggo Dumaring.
He served in the federal cabinet from 1968 to 1978 holding the portfolios of Minister of Justice, Minister of Transport, acting Minister of Health and Agriculture, Minister of Works and Utilities (longest portfolio for seven years).
As Minister of Works and Utilities, he was in charge of road development and he used this portfolio to hasten the linking up of the major towns in Sabah.
Ghani served under three prime ministers, Tunku Abdul Rahman, Tun Razak and Tun Hussein Onn.
