UMS lecturers trained 20 residents of Kg Darau to prepare and handle food

 

KOTA KINABALU: A lecturer from the Faculty of Business, Economics and Accountancy (FBEA), Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), trained 20 residents of Kampung Darau, Inanam in a Food Preparation and Handling Course recently.

Head of UMS Tourism Management Program, Associate Professor Dr. Awangku Hassanal Bahar Pengiran Bagul said the course aims to build community’s capacity to become a community-based tourism destination.

“Throughout it, the villagers have been exposed to the techniques of depiction and prepare suitable, unique, and popular dishes to be served to tourists.

“We have also motivated them to be more creative and use their plant materials in the preparation of food and beverages,” he said in a statement here, today.

Held at the UMS FBEA Hotelab, the course was organised in collaboration with FBEA and the City Tourism Development Department, Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK).

Dr. Hassanal said the course was conducted by the Senior Lecturer of UMS Hotel Management Program, Dr. Arif @ Kamisan Pusiran, and Senior Lecturer of UMS Marketing Program, Dr. Azaze @ Azizi Abdul Adis.

“Apart from food products, this course also shares knowledge and ideas on how to create quality and unique souvenir products.

“Hopefully, the efforts of UMS and DBKK can prepare the residents in the field of community-based tourism, thus empowering and creating side income for the community,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Director of the Urban Tourism Development Department, DBKK, Fauziahton Ag. Samad said the community is increasingly ready to receive tourists with the skills acquired.

“We thank all parties involved in the course in Kampung Darau, especially UMS, and all participants who attended,” he said.
