KOTA KINABALU: Datuk Mustapha Sakmud, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office (Sabah and Sarawak), is urging swift action and comprehensive solutions to tackle the persistent flooding problem affecting Sepanggar and surrounding areas, including Inanam.
The Member of Parliament for Sepanggar noted that recent heavy rainfall in the region has once again raised concerns among residents, particularly those living in flood-prone and landslide-risk zones.
According to him, the flooding issue in Sepanggar is not a new problem but rather an ongoing challenge that demands serious attention and continuous efforts from all relevant parties.
“The flooding problem in Sepanggar is not new. It is a recurring issue that requires serious attention, thorough investigation, and ongoing action from all relevant agencies,” he said.
Mustapha mentioned that he has visited several areas to assess the current situation and witness firsthand the challenges residents are facing following the heavy downpour.
He said the matter will continue to be escalated to relevant authorities including the Disaster Management Committee, the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA), and the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (JPS).
He emphasized that this step is crucial to ensure comprehensive investigation can be conducted before swift and effective follow-up measures are implemented.
“The safety and welfare of residents cannot be taken lightly.
“Efforts to find solutions to this recurring flooding problem must continue through close cooperation among all relevant agencies so that appropriate measures can be identified and executed,” he said.
Mustapha stressed that inter-agency collaboration is vital for identifying suitable measures to reduce the risk of flash floods and landslides that could endanger residents’ safety.
