SEMPORNA: A Chinese tourist tragically lost her life after losing consciousness during a snorkeling expedition with her family in the waters surrounding Pom Pom Island near here on Sunday.
The 66-year-old victim, originally from Yunan, China, was engaged in the snorkeling activity at approximately 12:30 in the afternoon when she began experiencing discomfort and requested to be brought back to the boat.
Semporna District Police Chief Supt Tan Hiap Wah explained that the victim was discovered unconscious once aboard the vessel.
“The victim received cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), but showed no response before being transported to Semporna Hospital for further medical care.
“Medical examination at the Emergency Ward of Semporna Hospital subsequently confirmed the victim’s death,” he said in a statement.
According to him, the investigation revealed that the victim had a history of asthma dating back approximately 10 years.
Police are currently conducting an investigation into the incident, treating it as a case of sudden death.
Tan also strongly advised tourism operators to consistently prioritize tourist safety, particularly during maritime activities.
