SANDAKAN: Sandakan MP, Vivian Wong Shir Yee, stated that the construction of a new tourism jetty is essential for facilitating tourist access to the nearby islands.
She said that currently, many tourists traveling to the resorts on the islands around Sandakan have to take boats from the jetty near the Central Market or next to the Post Office.
Furthermore, the exclusive management of the jetty raises concerns about tourist safety.
According to her, Sandakan has significant potential in eco-tourism, historical and cultural heritage, as well as biodiversity.
Therefore, the government should seriously consider the proposal for a new tourism jetty in Sandakan.
This is further emphasized by the reopening of the former Four Points by Sheraton Hotel, now known as Hotel Ormond, a leading hotel chain in the capital, which will soon operate in this city center, along with plans for new tourism development on Berhala Island.
Vivian Wong made these remarks during the debate on the Royal Address of His Majesty the King for the year 2026 in the Parliament.
She also stressed that the development of basic infrastructure in Sandakan should not be overlooked and requires more serious attention and action from the Federal Government.
She stated that as investors recognize the development potential of Sandakan and are willing to invest in the area, the government must also play its part by moving in tandem, strengthening, and enhancing the infrastructure facilities in Sandakan to attract more investors to this region.7
