Modi hails Malaysia as trusted partner, praises diaspora as bridge

SERI KEMBANGAN: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed Malaysia as a close and trusted partner. He underscored the pivotal role of the Indian diaspora as a living bridge anchoring the deepening Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two nations.

Speaking before a crowd exceeding 10,000 people, Modi stated that India-Malaysia relations are scaling new heights each year. He attributed this growth to strong people-to-people ties and expanding strategic cooperation.

The bilateral relationship entered a new phase after both leaders elevated ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2024. “Today, we walk hand in hand as partners towards progress and prosperity,” Modi said during the ‘Selamat Datang Modi Ji’ event, yesterday.

He described Malaysia as home to the world’s second-largest Indian-origin community. The diaspora remains a vital link connecting the histories, traditions, and aspirations of both countries.

Modi expressed special appreciation to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim for personally receiving him. “His special gesture reflects his love and respect for India and for all of you,” he told the audience.

He also announced new measures to deepen connectivity between the two nations. These include scholarships for Malaysian students of Indian origin and extending OCI card eligibility up to the sixth generation.

Plans for a new Indian consulate in Malaysia and enhanced youth exchanges were also revealed. Modi further invited Malaysians to visit India, highlighting its status as one of the world’s fastest-growing major economies.

He praised the community for preserving its heritage through hundreds of schools teaching Indian languages. Inspired by this history, India will establish a Thiruvalluvar Centre in Malaysia to strengthen shared cultural roots.

Modi congratulated organisers for a record-setting cultural showcase involving over 800 performers. He described the event as a symbol of unity and harmony that will be remembered for years to come.
