MAFFI to strengthen food security in Sabah

KOTA KINABALU: The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Industry (MAFFI) will continue to enhance food security and the state’s self-sufficiency by gradually reducing dependence on food imports through increased local production.

Its minister, Datuk Jamawi Jaafar, said that this initiative, which is the ministry’s first strategic priority, will focus on rice and paddy production, livestock sectors such as cattle and poultry, as well as vegetables and fisheries to ensure price stability, supply continuity, and the welfare of the people.

In line with this effort, he emphasised the need to boost productivity and modernise the agriculture and fisheries sectors by reducing reliance on traditional methods.

He made these remarks while delivering a speech at the Sabah Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Industry’s Address and the 2026 New Year Celebration at the Sabah Agricultural Department’s Multipurpose Hall today.

Jamawi said that the State Government emphasises agriculture, fisheries, and the food industry as strategic pillars for state development, not only to ensure food safety but also to strengthen economic resilience and generate income for rural communities.

“All planning and implementation by the ministry must align with the Sabah Maju Jaya agenda and be reinforced through close cooperation between the State Government and the Federal Government,” he said.

Jamawi added that the transition to smart agriculture, the use of mechanisation, precision farming practices, and the utilisation of data, technology, and innovation must be accelerated through strategic collaboration with universities and research institutions.

Commenting on youth involvement, he stated that the future of Sabah’s agriculture and fisheries sectors heavily relies on the younger generation, and these sectors need to be positioned as viable, dignified, and profitable careers.
