Nearly 1,000 policemen to be deployed for smooth conduct of Kinabatangan by-election

KOTA KINABALU: A total of 926 police personnel are to be stationed in Kinabatangan to ensure the upcoming by-election runs smoothly.

Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Jauteh Dikun stated that out of this number, 837 officers and personnel are assigned directly to the field for security control, traffic management, and monitoring during the election period, while the remainder are support from the Sabah Police Contingent Headquarters (IPK).

“The assignments cover all major phases of the by-election, starting from the nomination day on January 10, early voting on January 20, and the polling day on January 24.

“On the nomination day alone, 646 officers and personnel were mobilised to ensure security and that the process runs smoothly without any disruptions,” he said during a press conference at IPK Sabah.

“To strengthen our personnel, we are also receiving assignment support from nearby districts.

“As is well known, the assignment for the Kuamut area is under the Beluran District Police Headquarters (IPD), while the Lamag and Sukau areas are managed by the Kinabatangan IPD itself.

“Additional assistance also involves the IPD Sandakan, Lahad Datu, and Semporna, including the deployment of Battalion 15 of the General Operations Force (PGA) Sandakan,” he added.

Jauteh mentioned that the security situation in Kinabatangan is good and under control, emphasising that the area is not considered a hotspot in terms of security and has never recorded any serious incidents affecting public order.

He noted that previous incidents were confined to enclosed areas such as halls and did not compromise overall public safety.
