KUALA LUMPUR: The Election Commission (EC) will hold a special meeting on December 16 to discuss all preparations and establish important dates for the two by-elections.
The Secretary of the EC Malaysia, Datuk Khairul Shahril Idrus, stated that this is in response to the unexpected vacancy of the Kinabatangan parliamentary seat and the Lamag state constituency in Sabah.
He said that the meeting will be chaired by the EC Chairman, Datuk Seri Ramlan Datuk Harun, and is expected to be crucial in determining several critical matters in the by-election process.
“The special meeting will discuss the dates for the Election Writ, Nomination Day, Voting Day, the Voter Register to be used, and other preparations necessary for conducting the election,” he said in a statement here on Tuesday.
The vacancies for both seats arose following the passing of the incumbent, the late Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin, who held both positions as the Member of Parliament for Kinabatangan and the State Assemblyman (ADUN) for Lamag.
Khairul added that in accordance with Article 54(1) of the Federal Constitution and Article 21(5) of the Sabah State Constitution, the unexpectedly vacant seats must be filled within 60 days from the date the vacancy is confirmed by the EC.
He further stated that a press conference will be held immediately after the special meeting on December 16 concludes, to announce the official decisions and complete information regarding the by-election preparations.
