PUTATAN: People in this district and surrounding areas are urged to remain vigilant due to the heavy rain and storms affecting several districts in the state over the past few days.
Jeffery Nor Mohamed, the Putatan Umno chief, stressed the need for caution, especially for those living near coastal areas, following a warning from the Malaysian Meteorological Department about thunderstorms impacting various locations in Sabah for the last two days.
Affected areas include rural regions like Sipitang, Tenom, Kuala Penyu, Beaufort, Keningau, and Tambunan, as well as the West Coast, including Papar, Putatan, Penampang, Kota Kinabalu, Kota Belud, Kudat, and the Federal Territory of Labuan.
“I hope residents in this area and nearby take necessary precautions to avoid risks of flash floods, landslides, and fallen trees,” he stated.
He made these comments after rushing to Gaya Island to assess the condition of homes affected by the storm on Tuesday.
Jeffery, along with the Putatan Umno team, travelled by boat through rain and storms to personally check on the homes that suffered significant damage due to the storm.
“We sympathise with the victims; this is an unexpected disaster. The Umno division will assist as much as possible to help repair minor damages to their homes that can be fixed quickly,” he said.
He also expressed hope that relevant authorities, especially the Department of Social Welfare, would provide aid to the affected victims.
Additionally, Jeffery, who is also the Sabah UMNO Election Director, reminded the public to postpone outdoor activities and travel, including for fishermen, until the weather improves.
