Majlis Tenaga Sabah (MTS) approves 700 megawatt capacity generation project

KOTA KINABALU: Majlis Tenaga Sabah (MTS) in its second meeting approved several critical projects for the development of a total generation capacity of 700 Megawatts aimed at restoring the state’s Grid System.
Sabah Chief Minister, Datuk Seri Panglima Haji Hajiji Haji Noor, stated that among the main projects is the Hydroelectric Project and the Natural Gas Power Plant to ensure a reliable supply of electricity in the state for current and future use.
He said that the MTS meeting also heard feedback from the Energy Commission of Sabah (ECoS) regarding the progress of other important generation projects since the first MTS meeting last June.
“This includes decisions on the implementation of future energy source projects, namely the potential and methods of widespread hydroelectric development in Sabah through the Sabah Hydro Development Masterplan study currently being carried out by ECoS, as well as the development of the Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) plant through the concept of the Pioneer Project,” he said after chairing the second SEC Meeting at Menara Kinabalu on Thursday.
Hajiji hopes that all efforts undertaken will bring the best benefits in realising the achievement of energy in Sabah that is reliable, affordable, and sustainable.
He said these efforts are in line with the Sabah Energy Roadmap and Masterplan 2040 (SE-RAMP 2040) for the advancement of Sabah and to benefit the people of the state.
MTS was established following the transfer of energy regulatory powers from the Federal Government to Sabah and to replace the Sabah Electricity Supply and Tariff Planning and Implementation Committee (JPPPET).
