KOTA KINABALU: The immediate need, following the attack on the Ulu Tiram police station in which two policemen were killed and one injured, is to assure the people that vigilance against similar tragic incidents has been stepped up to prevent future occurrences.
The despicable incident has proven once again that the nation as a whole must always be on guard against all forms of extremism and radicalism to uphold our harmony and peace and ensure the safety of all.
And that it is safe to go about their daily lives without undue fear or foreboding.
Random acts of terrorism can be found in every corner of the earth due to extremism and the radicalization of groups fed on extreme propaganda, twisted religious beliefs, or ideologies.
We must always be vigilant against such acts of radicalism. Anything can happen when we least expect it.
It is important now to reassure the public that security at all police stations is beefed up. Also in all places where the public usually congregates, like airports, train stations, shopping malls, schools, and stadiums.
We should allow the police to carry out a full investigation to establish the motive of the Ulu Tiram attack, find out the extent of the influence of the deviant group, and determine their intended modus operandi.
The findings of the investigation must be speedily published for the public so that we can all be fully informed and play our part to avoid future similar incidents.
Meanwhile, our Special Branch of the Police Force needs to beef up its intelligence gathering to address issues of this nature in the future.

Our heartfelt condolences go to the families of the two policemen who were mercilessly killed. We also extend our prayers for the quick recovery of the policeman who was injured and is now undergoing treatment in the hospital.
