KOTA KINABALU: Former Sabah chief minister Datuk Seri Dr Salleh Said Keruak emphasized the importance of preventing private citizens or families from surpassing the wealth of the country’s Treasury, as it could potentially result in their undue control and influence over crucial government decisions and systems.
However, Salleh did not explicitly mention the specific individuals or families he was referring to.
In his latest Facebook post, he expressed his belief that the current government aims to reassure the nation’s people by addressing this concern.
To achieve this, Salleh suggested that the government may need to require exceptionally wealthy citizens or families to disclose their assets, in order to determine the extent of their wealth.
He also highlighted the significance of proper asset declaration and fair taxation, which should be embraced by all, particularly the super rich.
Salleh further emphasized that this principle and policy of ensuring that no private citizens or families surpass the state’s wealth is commonly practiced by highly developed democratic governments and states.
Such practices promote good governance and equitable distribution of wealth, ultimately contributing to a robust and prosperous economy.
